BARNSLEY Council’s school catering service is taking action to reduce meat and dairy consumption in a bid to meet environmental goals.

A Freedom of Information request revealed that the council takes into account that veganism is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.

As so, 50 per cent of the school catering service’s menu is plant-based, whilst they offer a minimum of one day per week meet free.

Though the request also revealed that it providing vegan food is not a requirement for the council’s contractors when providing the meals.
