A MINING banner will return home to be blessed this weekend after undergoing major restoration work.

The Dodworth and Redbrook Church Lane National Union of Mineworkers banner will be at St John’s Church in Dodworth on Sunday.

First used in May 1980, it has recently been comprehensively refurbished at the People’s History Museum in Manchester and tells the story of Dodworth Miners’ Welfare and was seen at demonstrations, galas and rallies throughout the 1980s.

Money to fund the work - which cost £6,500 - has been generously donated by ex-miners and their families, trade unions, local actors and businesses.

Following the blessing and hanging of the banner a celebration will take place at Dodworth Miners’ Welfare where local MP Stephanie Peacock will address the gathering.
