TRIBUTES have been paid to Barnsley icon Ted Johnson after he died at his Silkstone home last Thursday.

Ted was known to most people in the town through his Doncaster Road car dealership - Ted Johnson Honda.

He bought the land in 1960 for around £200 but it is believed cars have been bought and sold at the site since 1938.

He retired in 1997, but when locals want to describe something on Doncaster Road on the way towards Kendray, they still say it’s ‘just past Ted Johnson’.

His daughter, Viv, told the Chronicle he was a lovely man - after he died from a heart attack on October 26.

She added: “He was a lovely man - very kind.

“He worked hard every single day.

“People used to say to him that he was really lucky - but he’d tell them the harder he works the luckier he gets.

“He was a big supporter of charity work and he did a lot for the NSPCC.”

Ted leaves behind his two daughters, Viv and Sally, two granddaughters, a grandson and two great-great granddaughters.

His funeral will be held at Ardsley Crematorium on November 14 at 11.30am, and then a celebration of his life will take place an hour later at Silkstone Church.
