MORE than 21,000 patients were waiting for routine treatment at Barnsley Hospital in September, the latest figures show.

NHS England figures show 21,779 patients were waiting for non-urgent elective operations or treatment at the Gawber Road site at the end of September - down slightly from 21,921 in August, but an increase on 19,281 in September 2022.

Of those, 189 had been waiting for longer than a year.

The median waiting time from referral at an NHS Trust to treatment at Barnsley Hospital was 11 weeks at the end of September - the same as in August.

Professor Vivien Lees, from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, said: “Winter pressures have already started to affect the system.

“We are concerned that with increased demand, record staff vacancies and industrial action, this will all continue to hold back recovery efforts.”

At Barnsley Hospital, 2,817 patients were waiting for one of ten standard tests, such as an MRI scan, non-obstetric ultrasound or gastroscopy at this time.

Of them, 83 had been waiting for at least six weeks.
