AROUND £90,000 worth of medicine had to be written off at Barnsley Hospital in the year to September - an increase from £25,000 last year.

In August, it was revealed that a total of £57,000 worth of medicines used by the ophthalmology eye disorder department had been lost after staff failed to store them in fridges.

The latest report, which was discusses by board members yesterday, states the figure has increased.

It said: “The committee noted that to September 2023, £90,000 worth of medicines have been wasted compared with £25,000 in the same period last year.

“The committee asked the director of finance to investigate with the chief pharmacist and report to committee members.”
