BETTER support is now on offer for cancer sufferers and their families thanks to a partnership between Barnsley Hospital and Macmillan.

A new ‘information pod’ was unveiled this week at the site providing patients, staff, relatives and visitors with cancer-related support they may need when they are at the hospital.

The pod will house information such as ‘early signs and symptoms’, ‘A-Z of different cancer types’, as well as general cancer support booklets.

It has been built on the ground floor, near the volunteers’ coffee shop at the bottom of the escalator.

Lead cancer nurse Sara Andrews sourced the pod from cancer colleagues in Doncaster and it has since been specifically re-designed by Macmillan to meet the needs of Barnsley Hospital.

Sara added: “As the new information pod is Macmillan-funded, it has been at no cost to the trust and is situated in an ideal spot to be seen, as people come from their outpatient clinics.”

“Worryingly, people are not going to their GPs as soon as they might, and those who then end up diagnosed with a cancer are being diagnosed at a later stage than we would hope.”
