A PAIR of local councillors have hit out at mindless vandals who cut down a CCTV camera in Darfield last week.

The main column holding up the CCTV camera at the junction of Nanny Marr Road, Barnsley Road and Garden Street was ‘severely damaged’ last week.

The piece equipment has now been removed - and both Couns Kevin Osborne and Trevor Smith have said work is ongoing to keep the area safer.

Coun Osborne said: “Clearly some in our community have something to hide.

“Anyone with information on those responsible should contact South Yorkshire Police.

“This CCTV is installed to protect our community.

“Those who did this clearly believe they are somehow above the law.

“Our community will prevail.”

Coun Smith added that it shows criminal activity ‘is happening in Darfield’ - stating that he’s not seen an incident like this before.

“There’s now no CCTV in that area of Darfield - it’s a very serious situation,” he said.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like this before.

“It’s been taken down now and we’re looking at getting it sorted.

“It does show that there’s a criminal element to Darfield and I know that the police are now looking into this.”
