WORTLEY Men’s Club members are hoping to hit their £30,000 fundraising target to celebrate Barnsley Hospice’s 30th anniversary in 2024 - and their first event of the year has got them off on the right foot.

The club, based on Reading Room Lane, have been fundraising for the hospice for the last six years - raising around £25,000 in the process.

This year marks 30 years since Barnsley Hospice opened its doors, and club steward Nigel Pickering is hoping the club will be able to add another £5,000 to their fundraising goal this year.

He told the Chronicle: “Over the last few years we’ve managed to raise £25,000 for Barnsley Hospice.

“As it’s the hospice’s 30th year we would like to raise that amount for them.

“We’ve got a lot of events coming up, culminating with our beer festival later this year.

“We’ve got a race night coming up as well as a wing walk.

“Gavin Coles decided to do the Fan Dance - which is a 24-kilometre trek the SAS use as a selection process - this weekend and he raised £1,400 towards our goal.

“We should hopefully hit the £30,000.

“The hospice are absolutely amazing.

“They’re always so grateful and they work with us at our events as well.”
