TWO employees at a Wombwell food packing plant were rushed to hospital following a chemical spill last weekend.

Cranswick Convenience Foods, based on Valley Park, employs more than 1,000 people but emergency services attended the site on Saturday morning.

A spokesperson for the firm confirmed an incident had taken place.

They told the Chronicle: “We can confirm there was a small chemical spill in a maintenance area at our site in Wombwell last weekend, which was contained on the premises.

“All of the necessary procedures were followed to clean the area.

“As a precaution, two of our employees were taken to hospital and were discharged on the same the day.

“The site was operational within a few hours and there is no food safety risk as a result of the incident.”
