BARNSLEY’S Meat Mart has been working hard to give back to the community.

The butchers on Upper New Street have been coming up with innovative fundraising techniques that allow continued support to a local food bank.

Currently, with every carrier bag purchased 10p goes back to their charitable efforts through the government’s carrier bag levy, allowing £1,500 to be recently donated to Barnsley Foodbank Partnership.

Managing director, Jim Viggars, told the Chronicle: “We’re an ethical retailer, and our carrier bags are recycled and biodegradable.

“Every quarter we donate what we’ve raised and we continue to support food banks.

“Within a five mile radius of every Meat Mart there’s a food bank, it shows just how bad things have got.”

Beyond their work with food banks, Jim has also taken an interest in sponsoring and supporting the youth BFC Academy.

“My son used to play there,” he added.

“So I’ve sponsored their new football kits and have committed to carry on helping where I can.

“But this is just a small example of what we’ve done across our stores in 2023 - we’re always trying to do our best locally.”
