Barnsley’s club record 11-game unbeaten away run ended as they lost 2-1 at Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

The hosts scored twice through league top-scorer in the first half, either side of an Adam Phillips penalty.

Barnsley played fairly well in the first half and missed chances but struggled after the break and could have lost by more – with Liam Roberts conceding then saving an injury-time penalty.

The Reds, who have taken eight points from seven games, remain fifth and eight points behind second-placed Derby who did not play. They are six points clear of seventh-placed Lincoln City with a game in hand.

Phillips, John McAtee and Devante Cole came back into the 11 with Sam Cosgrove, Herbie Kane and Corey O’Keeffe benched. Fabio Jalo replaced Nathan James on the bench.

McAtee almost opened the scoring in spectacular style in the fourth minute when he outmuscled a defender to latch onto a long ball and lobbed former Barnsley goalkeeper Harry Isted 30 yards out but the ball landed on the roof of the net.

Cole, and the Reds coaches, then wanted a penalty when he tangled in the box with Terell Thomas after McAtee flicked on a Jon Russell pass following a good passing move.

Alfie May opened the scoring on 20 minutes, curling a 20-yard free-kick into the left side of the net through the Barnsley wall.

The visitors levelled ten minutes later when, after a corner was cleared, Philips swapped passes with Earl and his cross from the left of the box was blocked by the arm of Kayne Ramsay. The referee this time pointed to the spot and, with usual penalty-taker Kane on the bench, Neill Collins instructed Phillips to take it and he expertly found the bottom left corner.

Barnsley looked set to take the lead almost immediately after when Cole looked set to tap in two yards out from a low right-wing Phillips cross but his shot somehow went over. It later transpired it had been turned over by a defender.

Earl then hit the crossbar from 12 yards out after Russell headed down a Connell free-kick.

Thierry Small headed a half-chance wide at the back post, but Charlton soon retook the lead amid calls for offside.

May got his second of the game on 40 minutes when he cut in from the left far too easily and shot across Liam Roberts into the top right corner.

Barnsley had played well but were denied by their own wastefulness and the goals of the division’s top-scorer.

Dan Kanu could have added a third for the hosts just after the break but his 15-yard header from a right-wing cross went just over the bar.

Connell sent a difficult 18-yard volley over the bar after a long throw was cleared.

May almost completed his hat-trick after collecting a Dobson pass and curling a 20-yard shot onto the underside of the bar, before Chuks Anneke’s rebound header went just over.

At the other end, Cole headed off-target from a Phillips cross.

McAtee thought he should have had a penalty when Willliams played him clean through after a good move, but the referee waved the claims away.

Dobson was then put clean through and rounded Roberts but hit the side netting from a tight angle on the right. Anneke also headed a cross wide.

Substitute Fabio Jalo thought he had levelled in injury-time with a fine finish from the right but the flag was up for offside.

Roberts conceded a penalty in injury-time after he hesitated on the ball in the box and felled Tyreece Campbell. But he produced a fine save from Anneke’s spot-kick.

Reds coach Jon Stead was sent off late on.

Cosgrove played through Anneke on the right of the box but Roberts saved.

  • 2:14pm
The Reds, who have six league games left this season, are fifth in League One, eight points off second-placed Derby County with two games in hand.
  • 2:17pm
The Reds will look for a fifth successive away win, against the Addicks who are currently 16th, eight points and five places clear of the relegation zone.
  • 2:19pm
The London club were in danger of dropping into the fourth tier for the first time ever in February when they were outside the relegation zone on goal difference during an 18-match winless run.
  • 2:19pm
But Nathan Jones – the former Luton, Stoke and Southampton boss who was appointed earlier this year – has them on a ten-game unbeaten run, with seven draws including the last three.
  • 2:29pm
This week they drew 1-1 at Exeter City on Friday – thanks to a late own goal – then 0-0 at home to Stevenage on Monday.
  • 2:33pm
Only the bottom two have fewer wins than their ten but they have drawn the most in the EFL with 17.
  • 2:35pm
Collins told the Chronicle: “Nathan Jones is a very experienced manager who has had a lot of success. He has them well-organised. They are not conceding a lot and unbeaten in ten.
  • 2:36pm
Charlton have the division’s top-scorer in 21-goal Alfie May.
  • 2:37pm
Collins said: “Alfie May has been exceptional, to score that many goals. It’s very impressive. He’s a real livewire. But they have multiple good players throughout their squad.
  • 2:39pm
“It’s like playing a top six team. “The league doesn’t reflect that but I think that’s what it will feel like.”
  • 2:40pm
He added: “They are really dangerous. They have drawn with Portsmouth and Bolton, and beaten Derby since Nathan has taken charge.”
  • 2:40pm
Jones is Charlton’s third manager of the season after Dean Holden was sacked in August and Michael Appleton in January.
  • 2:41pm
The Welshman left Luton last season before their promotion, for Southampton who sacked him ahead of their relegation from the Premier League. He came up against Barnsley seven times at Luton manager, winning three times, drawing twice and losing twice.
  • 2:43pm
He has reunited with goalkeeper Harry Isted, who was at Barnsley last season before choosing to move to Charlton after his loan from Luton ended. He has been injured for much of the season but has been the regular stopper under Jones.
  • 2:46pm
The clubs drew 1–1 at Oakwell in December. Adam Phillips put the Reds in front with a controversial goal as Charlton thought the ball had gone out in the build-up. But Corey Blackett-Taylor, who has since moved to Derby, equalised in the second half.
  • 2:48pm
This will be the 55th meeting of the two clubs, with Barnsley winning 18 and losing 21, with just one win in the last five.
  • 2:52pm
The Reds have only won three games at the Valley, in three successive visits after 21 unsuccessful attempts.
  • 2:54pm
They won in 3-1 in 2008 – thanks to a Jon Macken brace and a Darren Moore goal – 1-0 in 2012 with Tomas Cywka netting and in 2014 when Jean Yves M’voto and Tom Kennedy scored in a 2-1 victory.
  • 2:56pm
They have since lost three straight games there in 2018, 2020 and 2023.
