A COMMUNITY litter-pick took place through Wombwell Woods last week in a bid to clear rubbish and fly-tipping.

The event, which took advantage of the road being closed due to resurfacing works on Wentworth Road, saw volunteers come together.

Residents joined the council’s South Area Team to pick litter and improve the cleanliness of Dovecliffe Road and the surrounding area in Wombwell Woods.

Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and transport, told the Chronicle: “I’m hugely grateful to volunteers from the Wombwell Womblers and Wath and West Melton Litter Pickers who came along to support the community clean-up in Wombwell Woods.

“We managed to clear plenty of rubbish and improve the environment through the woods.

“This event came about as a result of a happy coincidence with the road being closed for highways works, so we were take to take advantage of not having cars going past, on what is usually a fast-moving road, in order to get the litter cleared.

“Massive thanks to all who helped - it goes to show that many hands do make light work.”
