THE community rallied together to create a special memorial area at Birdwell Primary School in memory of a dedicated member of staff.
Sue Black, a much-loved school meals supervisory assistant, recently died after years of service to the school.
Headteacher Steve Honeyman said Sue’s presence and impact on the school community were undeniable, as she touched the lives of countless students and staff with her warmth, kindness and unwavering commitment to her role.
To honour her memory and all that she contributed to Birdwell, the school council organised an Easter bake-off fundraiser to raise funds for the creation of a memorial area.
Steve said: “The event was more than just a fundraiser - it was a poignant tribute to Sue’s legacy, with members of the community turning out to participate and show their support.
“From students and parents to teachers and local residents, everyone came together to celebrate Sue’s life and the lasting imprint she left on the school.
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and the touching display of community spirit shown in creating this memorial area for Sue.
“Sue was a cherished member of our school family and it’s heartening to see how much she meant to so many people.”
Working closely with local company Precision Timber, the school was able to bring the memorial area to fruition, with the construction company bringing the school’s design ideas to life.
The resulting space serves as a fitting tribute to Sue’s memory, providing a beautiful place for members of the school community.
