Sunderland have confirmed they will not be taking their option to sign Barnsley’s Callum Styles – leaving the Hungary international’s future unclear.
Styles, who became the first Reds player to appear in the European Championships last week before Hungary were eliminated in the group stage, spent the second half of last season on loan to the Championship Black Cats.
Other clubs are thought to be interested in Styles, who is yet to return for pre-season training as he has been given extra time off this summer following his international duty.
He still has one year left on his contract with Barnsley, where he has played for six years and made 151 appearances but has been loaned out to Millwall and Sunderland in the two most recent seasons.
Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “As we continue to plan for the new season, we have decided not to take the option in Callum’s loan agreement and therefore his time with us has concluded. Callum’s attitude and application was first class throughout his time at the club and we wish him well for the future."
The Reds players have returned to full training today.
