A Hoyland karate kid is fighting for her place in the World Karate Federation Championships.

Chloe Sheldon, of Kirk Balk, will kick and punch her way through the European Championships in Zurich in May with the hope of securing a place at the international competition.

The 18-year-old first dan black belt said: "I'm very excited. I need to train more than usual at the moment so I'm training four times a week and running on the days I'm not at the gym."

England squad member Chloe began karate when she was ten after her step-dad, Tim Shirt, spotted an advert in the paper. "I didn't even know about it before I started but I've loved it ever since I started doing it," she said.
