WOMBWELL Town under 14s have become the first girls’ team at their club to gain promotion after finishing second in Division Four of the Sheffield and Hallamshire League.

The team started three seasons ago with all players being new to football, and were the first of several girls’ sides at their club.

They finished their season with a 3-1 win over Barnsley Women.

Manager Gavin Johnson said: “I am so proud of what the girls have accomplished this season, securing promotion through hard work, dedication and team work.

“Their attitude is exemplary and it is a pleasure and honour to lead them.”

Wombwell Town Black under 12s boys won 4-0 over Killamarsh in their league’s Vase final. The scorers were Dom Thompson, twice, Ellis Leeming and Oscar Brown.

Meanwhile, Barnsley Schoolgirls under 12s went back to the top of their league with a 3-1 win over Hull. Lilah Malcolm, player of the match Emma Kirk and Elise Love got the goals.

Barnsley Schoolboys under 11s finished their season with a 7-1 win over York. Harry Richardson scored a hat-trick, Eddie Clarke added two with Seth Allen and Charlie Abbott also netting.
