THE zip wire at a Wombwell park has had to be temporarily cordoned off after vandals damaged a patch of grass from its runway.

The play area on Summer Lane has long been a target for vandals and antisocial behaviour.

But local councillors believe that the latest piece of damage - which has seen someone remove a piece of grass from the runway of the zip wire - was a targeted attack.

It has resulted in the seat of the zip wire being removed to ensure no one is harmed.

In a joint statement, Couns James Higginbottom, Brenda Eastwood and Robert Frost said: “We were appalled to hear about an incident of criminal damage carried out at Summer Lane play area.

“Every incident of damage to our parks costs the council money - money which could otherwise be put to improving play equipment and green spaces for local families.

“We are in touch with South Yorkshire Police and would encourage anyone with any information about this latest incident to report to the police.

“We are working with our Parks Services team to improve the Summer Lane play area, which has suffered from persistent vandalism and antisocial behaviour in the past, including replanting the grass and refurbishing the MUGA area for local kids to use.

“It’s hugely disappointing that a mindless minority seem determined to spoil facilities for the whole community.”
