NEW speed controlling measures have been implemented at a notorious speeding hotspot in Barnsley.
Speed indicator devices (SIDs) promote safe driving behaviour, increase awareness of speed limits and enhance road safety for all road users, according to the council.
A SID gives a visual alert to road users of the speed limit in force on that road with the primary objective being to reduce speeding.
Ardsley Hill has long been a speeding hotspot, with mobile speed cameras regularly placed in the area to catch drivers breaking the law.
A device measuring the speed of vehicles has now been placed at the top of the hill, coming into Barnsley - and it’s hoped it will ensure drivers are well within the speed limit.
Coun Ian Shirt, who represents the Stairfoot ward, told the Chronicle: “Speed indicator devices serve as an essential tool in our drive for increased road safety in the borough.
“They act as a useful reminder to drivers of the speed limit and can help keep everyone safe on roads in Stairfoot ward.”
Another one of those devices has been placed in Birdwell, much to the delight of Coun Sherry Holling.
She said: “Residents of Birdwell have engaged with me over road safety issues on and around the Birdwell zebra crossing.
“The installation of this SID will assist in reminding drivers to watch their speed in our community and contribute to improving road safety for all.”
