FORMER Barnsley striker Andy Payton has revealed he is living with dementia aged 57.
Payton, who also played for Celtic and Burnley among others, said his neurologist told him his condition is due to his football career, during which he believes he headed a ball more than 10,000 times. In an interview with The Sun, he said he suffers from short-term memory loss and his partner ‘more or less manages my day-to-day life.’
Payton joined the Reds from Celtic in 1993, in a swap for Wayne Biggins, and stayed three years, scoring 45 goals in 122 matches – including two hat-tricks and five braces – before moving on to Huddersfield Town.
