BARNSLEY club runners enjoyed success individually and collectively up and down the country this week.
Penistone’s Dawn Broom represented England Masters against Wales Masters at the Swansea Half Marathon.
She finished as tenth over60 woman in 1-40-53.
Ten Penistone runners took on the Billy Bland Challenge which involves a team of five pairs running the five legs of the Lake District Bob Graham challenge as a relay.
The route is 66 miles long and involves running over 42 of the Lake District’s summits. Starting at 1am and running in rainy and slippy conditions, the team were very happy to complete in the challenge in a time of 20 hours and ten minutes. The runners were Jon Hallam, Dan Rushforth, Steve Sanders, Mark Crossley, Shaun Swallow, Tom Fryers, James Fryers, George Parr, Richard Cottam, Damian Kilpin and Suzanne McGill – supported by Liz Hutchison and Paul Fryers.
Barnsley AC’s Amelie Spicer travelled to Liverpool for the Northern Under 17 Championships.
She finished fourth in the 300m with 41.69 and seventh over 200m in 26.67.
The Bronte five road race held in Haworth incorporated the Yorkshire Veterans Athletics Association Championships.
Barnsley AC’s Keith Littlewood finished 15th overall and was over55 man in a time of 32-09.
He was closely followed by Lydia Race who was second over40 woman as well as the second woman overall with a time of 32-48.
Penistone’s Nichola McNally was first over50 woman and fourth woman overall at the Marsden ten-mile trail race.
Lesley Parker was fourth over50 woman.
Penistone’s Jemma Williams completed the Cateran Yomp in Scotland which is a 56-mile 24-hour event for the Army Benevolent Fund. She completed the challenge in 20 hours and 13 minutes.
Penistone’s Jill Carlton and Rachael Mayston completed the 37-mile Shepherd’s Ultra in Northumberland, finishing in sixth and seventh place respectively.
Penistone’s Martyn Goodwin was second over60 man in 1-00-29 at the Castleton Fell Race.
Penistone’s Gemma Nutton finished in a time of 50-59 at the Filey Beach 10k.
Penistone’s Josie Smith successfully completed her first ever marathon at the challenging Coniston Lakeland Trails event.
Penistone’s Martin Hughes and Julia Johnson ran the Ilkley 10k road race.
Julia picked up gold in the women’s over60 age category.
Barnsley AC’s Lesley Pickersgill finished as third over55 woman with 48-48.
At Kimberworth Striders Kimmy Kanter off-road race, Barnsley AC’s Chris McNicholas finished as first over60 man in a time of 28-10.
Harrison Fordham was the first home of the 20 Barnsley Harriers, and first junior overall, with Sally Gray taking the women’s over65 prize.
Lee and Zoe Mitchell finished St Alban’s Half Marathon, nicknamed the Ice Lolly Run due to the post race treats handed out.
They completed the 13.1-miles in 1-57-27 and 1-57-28 respectively.
At the Run for All 10k in Hull, Barnsley Harrier Wendy Jeffels set a PB while Angie Slater continued to raise money for brain tumour research.
Harrier Georgi Newton ran the Ridgeline Ramble for Reggie, a five-mile self-navigated route.
Last week, the fourth Oxspring Trunce of the summer took place.
Penistone’s George Parr finished in second place overall followed by teammate Richard Cottam in third.
Cottam was first over40 man, Parr second senior man, Barbara Haigh second over70 woman, Tony Wright second over50 man, Hannah Shaw third senior woman and Jill Scrivens third over50 woman.
Barnsley AC’s Lesley Pickersgill finished in 43-36.
There were PBs for Harriers Jon Carr, Paul Wheatley and Rachel Gray.
Penistone’s Edward Holly placed sixth in the Junior Trunce with 14-59.
At Barnsley ParkRun, Barnsley AC’s Beth Massey was first female finisher in 23-12 while Taylor Hughes equalled his course PB with 18-33 to finish second overall. Mark Wood celebrated his 250th ParkRun milestone at Concord ParkRun.
Also at Concord, Vicky Shaw ran a course PB of 19-38 and finished first woman in her 200th ParkRun.
There were first gender places for Penistone’s Jill Scriven (Horton Park) and Suzanne McGill (Cockermouth Greenway). Third places went to Sean Pitt (Penistone) and Alan Nutton (Selby). Age-graded runners of the week were Alan Nutton (80.00 per cent), Ian Neville (78.66 per cent), Suzanne McGill (77.02 per cent), Rob Lees (76.47 per cent) and John Broom (75.08 per cent).
