HEAVY goods vehicles are getting stuck under a Dearne railway bridge because there are no signs to warn them of the restricted height.

Mick and Joanne Hill run a paper shop beside the bridge and are fed up of vehicles having to back up along Furlong Road.

“It’s not just one a week, it’s three times a day,” said Mick.

“Last week one of my assistants had to dash outside and wind the shutters in because a truck was backing into it.

The drivers don’t even seem to realise that they’re hitting something and others just drive off. One truck hit a car the other day and the woman driver followed it into Goldthorpe to challenge him.

“There are no signs warning them of the bridge until they’re on Furlong Road and then they have to try to turn round.”

The bridge has been a cause for concern for many years, but especially since footpaths were built on either side to accommodate wheelchairs. The Give Way sign on the Bolton-upon-Dearne side of the bridge is often ignored or hidden by overgreen shrubbery.
