Barnsley made it two wins from as games this season with a 2-0 Yorkshire derby victory at Bradford City.
Tom Bradshaw opened his account for the season early on then substitute Victor Adeboyejo secured the win midway through the second half with his second goal in as many matches.
Barnsley only arrived at the game with 40 minutes until kick-off but produced an excellent display which silenced the home crowd in the overall attendance of 18,986.
Daniel Stendel kept the same team which thrashed Oxford United 4-0 on the opening day a week previously and they continued that momentum with a goal in the sixth minute.
After Kieffer Moore had one effort blocked and another saved in a goalmouth scramble, Dimitri Cavare immediately crossed back in for Bradshaw to brilliantly send a diving header into the net from ten yards out.
The Reds were well on top for the next ten minutes with Moore having a shot deflected wide and seeing home goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell tip over his effort from Alex Mowatt's corner.
The hosts were ripped open by several counter-attacks but the Reds could not find the clinical last pass or finish. City's only real chance came when Cavare miskicked an attempted clearance from a right-wing cross but it went straight at Adam Davies who produced a smart reaction save, although the referee had already flagged for a foul.
The match quietened down and Barnsley took a well-deserved lead into the interval. Bradford abandoned the 3-4-3 which had been exposed often early on and switched to a more solid 4-4-2 at the interval.
The Reds started well again with Mowatt having a 25-yard effort tipped over the bar. The hosts thought they should have had a penalty for a foul by Ethan Pinnock on Sean Scannell but referee Tim Robinson did not give the foul. Anthony O'Connor headed the resulting corner just over the bar.
Soon after it was 2-0 as Adeboyejo held the ball up superb and unlocked the home defence with a pass to fellow substitute George Moncur who sprinted 50 yards down the left before firing the ball across goal for the 20-yard-old to tap in.
That goal sucked the life out of Bradshaw and Barnsley almost added to their lead with Moncur sending two long-range efforts over the bar then Bradshaw forcing an excellent save from a header off a Mowatt corner.
AS IT HAPPENED
13:51pm
Hello and welcome to the Chronicle’s live coverage of Barnsley’s match at Bradford City which kicks off at 3pm today.
13:53pm
The Reds’ travel to their Yorkshire rivals’ Valley Parade stadium hoping to build on an excellent opening day which saw them batter Oxford United 4-0 at Oakwell a week ago.
Unsurprisingly Daniel Stendel has kept the same team which thrashed Oxford United 4-0 on the opening day a week previously. Jordan Williams replaces Jared Bird on the bench
14:07pm
Mamadou Thiam smashed the hosts 2-0 ahead from 25 yards then Brad Potts and Victor Adeboyejo added two more late on.
14:12pm
A big crowd is expected today as the Bantams had the highest attendances in League One last season by almost 2,000, with an average of 19,787, while the Reds have sold their 2,500 away tickets.
14:12pm
Andreas Winkler, assistant to Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel, is expecting a tougher challenge than the opening day win over Oxford United. He said: “Everybody wants to show that the performance against Oxford was not just for one day. I think we will learn more about the players in this game than the Oxford game. The players might be a little bit more nervous.”
14:18pm
He added: “We know that we can improve. If you start with a 4-0, you have to be lucky. There was a time to celebrate the result but we then had things to improve on. We worked with the analysts and showed the players how they can improve.”
14:21pm
Winkler continued: “We are working on what runs to make on the counter-attack and also improving our pressing as well as making our set pieces better because we want to score from them. The players have their feet on the ground and they know the Oxford game was just one game.”
14:28pm
Bradford appointed their former under 18s manager Michael Collins as first team boss this summer, despite him not applying for the job. He is the youngest manager in the EFL aged 33.
14:29pm
He won his first match as a manager, 1-0 at last season’s beaten play-off finalists Shrewsbury Town on Saturday. The goal-scorer was Huddersfield Town loanee Jack Payne who is living with Barnsley’s Alex Mowatt after the midfielders played together at Oxford United last season.
14:29pm
Stendel will still be without Zeki Fryers and Ryan Hedges, pictured, who have ankle injuries and are unlikely to return to action until next month.
14:32pm
Both clubs have connections to Germany as Bradford are owned by Edin Rahic and Stefan Rupp while Barnsley’s coaching staff is German with head coach Daniel Stendel being supported by Andreas Winkler and Christopher Stern.
14:33pm
The two clubs have met 107 times with 37 wins for the Bantams and 38 for the Reds. Barnsley have lost just one of their last ten matches against Bradford, a 1-0 defeat in April 2015.
14:35pm
In the Reds’ 2015/16 promotion season, they drew 0-0 with the Bantams at Oakwell then won at Valley Parade in both the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, with goals from Alfie Mawson and Marley Watkins, and League One with Watkins again on target.
14:35pm
Midfielder Brad Potts, who made it 3-0 against Oxford, said: “Bradford are a team who are always up there in league one and it will be a tough test. But we know if we play how we can we can beat anyone in this league.”
14:37pm
Potts is one of five senior central midfielders competing for a place this season. He played out of position on the right wing against Oxford with Alex Mowatt and Kenny Dougall starting centrally while George Moncur and Cameron McGeehan were brought off the bench.
14:38pm
Potts said of the competition for places: “Everyone wants to play but we know there are a lot games and the whole squad will be getting used. Cam and Moncs are proven in this league so when they are coming off the bench it’s really good for us and teams we are playing will be worried about it.”
14:38pm
Victor Adeboyejo, 20, scored the fourth goal seven minutes into his Oakwell debut, ending a 455-day wait for competitive football after moving from Leyton Orient.
14:41pm
The young striker said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better day. Hopefully that goal will put me more in the manager’s plans. I want to get as many minutes and goals as I can and get promoted.”
14:47pm
As well as the win over Oxford, Barnsley received a further boost this week when the summer transfer window deadline passed without the sale of any of their star players such as Tom Bradshaw and Kieffer Moore.
14:47pm
There were some incomings as 18-year-olds Callum Styles, pictured, and Jordan Williams arrived at the club on four-year deals. Central midfielder Styles has been loaned straight back to Bury in League Two until January while right-back Williams will remain at Oakwell.
14:48pm
The Reds also brought in 20-year-old striker Gerry McDonagh from Nottingham Forest. The Irishman will start with Martin Devaney’s under 23s.
14:53pm
The two teams have gone back down the tunnel but the atmosphere is hotting up with some noise coming from the home and away ends
14:53pm
This huge stadium is filling up nicely and it's sure to be one of the biggest attendances in the division today
14:58pm
The players are walking onto the pitch between two lines of young children waving Bradford flags.
14:59pm
The home fans make a huge roar as the players emerge but there is a large number of Reds fans just to their right who are also in good voice
14:59pm
The Barnsley supporters are filling one stand behind a goal and a third of one of the side stands
15:00pm
Adam Davies, the captain, has led the team out and now they are shaking hands with the home squad
15:01pm
A minute's applause for Bradford's former club doctor Vince Cavaliere who sadly passed away last month
15:03pm
A huge roar erupts from both sets of fans after that applause
15:05pm
GAME UNDERWAY
15:06pm
2 Sean Scannell, a winger with more than 300 Championship appearances, is already giving Ethan Pinnock problems and wins a corner
15:06pm
2 Pinnock does well to head the corner away and Kenny Dougall eventually gets it fully away
15:07pm
Bradford are playing three at the back with wing-backs Joe Riley and Adam Chicksen on the flanks
15:09pm
4 Barnsley fans enjoy Jack Payne falling over while trying to send a free-kick into their box which is easily cleared
15:10pm
GOAL!
6 Tom Bradshaw
15:11pm
What a start for the away side! A cross from the right is brilliantly headed into the back of the net from the striker ten yards out
15:12pm
The chance came after some real pinball in the home box with Kieffer Moore having two shots, one of which was blocked and the other saved
15:13pm
It was an excellent cross by Dimitri Cavare and a really good finish
15:14pm
10 Barnsley almost in behind the home defence again after a Cavare shot takes several deflections and nearly puts Moore clean through but the Bantams clear
15:15pm
11 Another good chance as the hosts are cut open again. Thiam puts Bradshaw through and his low square pass cannot find Moore then the ball is recycle and Moore's shot is deflected just wide for a corner
15:16pm
12 Mowatt's corner bounces in the box and is flicked by Moore and the home goalkeeper tips the ball over the bar
15:17pm
13 Bradford are all over the place at the back. Mowatt corner cleared but he has 20 yards of space when Pinillos passes back to him. His cross from just outside the box almost sneaks in with Potts lurking nearby
15:17pm
The Reds are absolutely dominating the home team at the moment and the home fans are getting slightly frustrated, but still very loud
15:18pm
15 Thiam – a different player after his brace last week – tries a shot from 25 yards which is powerful but straight at home goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell
15:19pm
Barnsley are passing the ball around superbly. They are doing really well but will want to make this dominance count with a second goal though
15:20pm
The home back three are really struggling to pick up the likes of Thiam and Potts who are drifting in from the wings to interact with strikers Moore and Bradshaw
15:22pm
Thiam should have passed out to the right on a counter with both Potts and Cavare in yards of space but he tried to dribble too much and was tackled
15:23pm
This is the moment Tom Bradshaw put the Reds ahead
15:25pm
Bradford have had a decent last few minutes with Eoin Doyle firing over from long range. They haven't really got behind the away defence yet
15:26pm
Barnsley fans chant 'Stendel, Stendel, give us a wave' but he is totally oblivious
15:27pm
23 Sweeper keeper Adam Davies comes out of his box to meet an attempted through ball and blasts it well into the City half
15:28pm
The match has settled down very slightly since the Reds made a magnificent start, but they will still be delighted with the first 24 minutes
15:29pm
It is the away fans who you can hear in full voice despite being massively outnumbered,. They are delighted with their team so far
15:30pm
Daniel Stendel has a little word with Dani Pinillos has he takes a throw just in front of the dugout. But generally the Reds head coach must be very pleased with his side so far
15:32pm
27 Bradford's first chance is from a Reds player as Cavare slices a clearance straight at Adam Davies. But the goal would not have counted as the referee gave a foul
15:33pm
That chance came from Pinnock trying to pick up a loose ball after a Dougall tackle but he tripped over a Bradford player who was lying on the floor
15:34pm
Half an hour gone and the Reds will be pleased with their start. The only very slight negative is that they could have made it 2-0 when well on top in the first 15 minutes
15:35pm
31 Dani Pinillos is having a good game. He jinks past one home player then is flattened by Kelvin Mellor and Barnsley have a free-kick on the left wing
15:36pm
33 Alex Mowatt's free-kick is headed out for a throw-in
15:37pm
Stendel now responds to the requests of a wave to the away fans, who cheer in response
15:40pm
Less than ten minutes remain until the half-time break and Barnsley still look the more threatening team.
15:40pm
YELLOW CARD
Anthony O’Connor
15:40pm
First booking of the game as the home centre-back takes out Bradshaw during a counter-attack
15:43pm
Barnsley are playing some very good stuff, with Bradshaw dropping deep to exchange passes with impressive central duo Mowatt and Dougall while the full-backs are pushing well up to join in attacks
15:43pm
40 Slightly nervous moment as Dougall hits a powerful pass back to Davies who scrambles across and slices out of play.
15:45pm
Barnsley fans celebrating the earlier goal
15:45pm
Dimitri Cavare who crossed for the opener
15:46pm
42 Thiam brings a long ball down and runs towards goal then fires wide from 25 yards with Bradshaw yelling at him for not passing. The Frenchman is determined to shoot on sight after his two 25-yards last week
15:47pm
Kenny Dougall once again is winning every loose ball in the middle then looking to run or pass forward.. He nicks possession then is fouled and Barnsley have a free-kick on halfway
15:48pm
45 Alex Mowatt's corner is cleared to Dougall whose 25-yard shot is high and wide
15:50pm
HALF-TIME: Bradford 0, Barnsley 1.
15:55pm
Dani Pinillos has been on top form so far
16:07pm
SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
16:07pm
46 Alex Mowatt has a shot tipped over from 25 yards 25 seconds after the break. Corner
16:08pm
The corner is cleared but that's a good start again from the Reds
16:09pm
The home side have brought on Sherwin Seedorf - nephew of Holland legend Clarence – and they seem to have changed to a 4-4-2
16:11pm
It's definitely 4-4-2 as Michael Collins' side look to be more solid after the three at the back struggled
16:12pm
Another lovely move between Pinillos, Thiam and Mowatt sees the latter break into the home box from the right, the cross is blocked then the resulting corner is cleared
16:14pm
Kieffer Moore is limping after taking a knock but is now up and receiving treatment. The Reds currently down to ten men
16:16pm
Moore is back on but limping quite heavily. But there aren't any signs of a substitution yet
16:18pm
Thinking about substitutions, could Stendel bring on Isgrove for Brad Potts who has had a fairly quiet game out of position on the wing? Having said that, the super-fit Potts could be a threat on the counter-attack late on
16:19pm
Despite Barnsley making a blistering start, there haven't really been that many chances in this match for either side.
16:21pm
59 Bradford think they should have a foul on the edge of the Reds box but Cavare runs 40 yards up the pitch before clattering fairly into Nat Knight-Percival and the ball runs loose and is cleared
16:22pm
Less than half an hour to go now in this Yorkshire derby, Barnsley are still playing the better football but it's become a much tighter afar as the match has gone on
16:23pm
62 Jack Payne sends in a left-wing free-kick to the back post but Anthony O’Connor arrives slightly too late and sends it well wide
16:25pm
63 Mowatt and Potts both run up to a free-kick at the same time then stop, then Mowatt takes it and overhits it from the left and it goes over everyone
16:26pm
64 Another cross is whipped through the Reds box, this time by Sherwin Seedorf. The home fans are waking up a little bit but Adam Davies' goal is not under major threat
16:27pm
65 Huge appeal for a penalty. Sean Scannell goes down under a tackle by Ethan Pinnock but the referee gives nothing
16:28pm
66 The left-wing corner is headed over by Anthony O’Connor. City's best chance so far
16:28pm
Looks like a double change for the Reds here. George Moncur and Victor Adeboyejo
16:28pm
SUB OFF
Mamdou Thiam and Kieffer Moore
16:29pm
SUB ON
George Moncur and Victor Adeboyejo
16:29pm
So Moncur will go on the wing with Victor joining Bradshaw up front
16:30pm
Moore caused some problems for the home defence but is still yet to perfect his finishing in a Barnsley shirt, wasting a couple of half chances when the visitors dominated early on
16:30pm
Thiam looks buoyed by his two goals last week but tried to shoot a couple of times when he should have passed to open team-mates. However, he was also involved in some of the excellent moves the Reds put together
16:31pm
GOAL!
Victor Adeboyejo
16:33pm
That's two in two games in his Reds' career. They've both been tap ins in the six-yard box
16:34pm
Adeboyejo made this goal though with some brilliantly hold up play on the halfway line before passing to Bradshaw who had yards to run into down the left. He powered into the box superbly and fired in a shot which wriggled through the goalkeeper and was put in on the line by Victor
16:36pm
The home fans are almost totally silent now, apart from a few cries of frustration. The away end is very noisy
16:36pm
Dani Pinillos is down with what looks like cramp but he gets up and jogs back with the fans singing his name
16:37pm
76 Barnsley look more likely to go 3-0 up than Bradford to reply. Another good break from Bradshaw leads to Potts finding Moncur who curled over from 25 yards
16:38pm
YELLOW CARD

16:42pm
This will be some come back if Bradford get anything from this game. They have barely attacked since going 2-0 down
16:44pm
82 Good work from George Moncur sees Bradshaw played in on the left of the box but his shot is blocked
16:46pm
Adeboyejo celebrates after his goal

Away fans: 2,552
16:49pm
'You've only come to see the Barnsley' chant the away fans after hearing the attendance announced
16:49pm
It's a long stoppage as Adam Chicksen gets a bandage attached to his head. He's up now and Barnsley have a free-kick
16:50pm
Potts' cross is not the bench but cleared for a corner
16:50pm
