AN appeal has been launched by a developer after Barnsley Council’s planning board refused permission to convert Hoyland Town Hall into 27 residential apartments.

Applicant Lee Jones submitted his plan to the council in August last year, but was refused consent in October.

The council said the proposal would provide substandard levels of amenity for occupants, an insufficient mix of unit types and would offer no other contributions to local infrastructure.

The building, on High Street, was used by Hoyland Town Council up until its abolition in 1974 and as office space thereafter.

The application will now be considered by the Planning Inspectorate, which has the power to overrule the council’s decision.
