FLOODING is expected to hit properties in Darton and Wombwell, the government’s Flood Information Service has warned.

The agency issued flood warnings for the Dearne at Darton and Barugh, and the River Dove from Aldham Bridge to Low Valley including Wombwell Ings Caravan Site, saying river levels have risen as a result of the persistent heavy rainfall and flooding of property and roads is ‘expected’.

Areas most at risk are properties on Church Street. “Further rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours and we expect river levels to remain high until 9am tomorrow,” the update said.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are closely monitoring the forecast and our incident room is open.”

A 'flood alert' - where flooding of roads and low-lying land is possible, but flooding is not expected, is in place for the River Dearne catchment.

Across Barnsley 12 roads have been closed due to today’s heavy rain and a further 20 areas are being monitored. North Lane in Cawthorne, Dance Lane in Crane Moor, New Road in Elsecar, Smithley Bridge Lane in Hemingfield, Sheffield Road in Hoyland, Horn Lane in Ingbirchworth, Swallow Hill Road in Mapplewell, Huddersfield Road and Whams Road, both Penistone, New Road in Pilley, Pitt Street in Wombwell and Worsbrough Dale’s Station Road are all flooded.

Further areas across Barnsley - including Barugh Green, Bolton-upon-Dearne, Cundy Cross, Darton, Goldthorpe, Haigh, Higham, Hoyland, Hoylandswaine, Kingstone, New Lodge, Penistone, Silkstone, Smithies, Thurgoland, Thurnscoe and Worsbrough - are being assessed.

Flooding at Denby Dale means services are unable to run between Huddersfield and Sheffield via Penistone.

Stagecoach confirmed that due to road closures, traffic and surface water services across the borough are delayed.
