A PRIMARY school will be representing Barnsley in the South Yorkshire finals of a cricket competition.

Wombwell High View Primary’s year one and two team won the key stage one All Stars cricket tournament at Wombwell Main Cricket Club.

And the years three and four team have just won the Barnsley championships, meaning they will now compete at Abbeydale in July as part of the South Yorkshire finals.

Both wins represent the school retaining the title for another year in each competition.

School sports co-ordinator Gordon Calvert said: “For some players, they did make it to the final last year where we were beaten but for some it will be a whole new experience. If they win the South Yorkshire final this tme, they will be one step closer to Headingley for the Yorkshire final where they would play before a Yorkshire Twenty20 game.

“It is fantastic, it underpins everything school stands for as regarding sport being important to young people. We do feed into a lot of local clubs like Darfield, Wombwell, Wath and Shaw Lane so there are a lot of pathways if they want to carry on with the sport after school.”
