A LONG-SERVING primary school teacher has retired after 33 years at the same school.

Karen Carver has been at Mapplewell’s Wellgate Primary for more than three decades and has taught many children of former pupils.

She has spent almost her whole career at the school, except for brief spells early on as a supply teacher at Richard Newman in Athersley South, and Wilthorpe.

“I’ve seen the nursery built here, and the junior section, because we used to be an infants school, so I’ve seen a lot of changes,” said Karen, 59, of Hough Lane, Wombwell.

“Now it’s coming to an end, I have mixed feelings really. It’s quite emotional. I’ve got lots of happy memories.”

Karen is hoping to enjoy more travelling with partner Dean Smith.

“It might be a bit cheaper now we can go in term time,” she said.
