TWO goals from free-kicks ensured Barnsley passage into the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 2-1 win over Bradford City.

Marley Watkins and skipper Alfie Mawson both converted from Conor Hourihane centres to rule out Billy Knott's opener and send The Reds through.

Seven days after the first game had to be postponed due to a heavy downpour, Barnsley had another chance to book their place in the next round and a home tie with York City.

George Smith broke down the left in the first five minutes but he and then Watkins were eventually crowded out by the home side's defence.

Bradford livened up at about the 20 minute mark and were ahead soon after that.

Knott had his initial shot blocked by Mawson, but capitalised on the rebound to slide it past Adam Davies from the left hand side of the box.

Mark Marshall then threatened and powered a shot in from distance which Davies managed to cling on to.

A number of stoppages ensured a stop start run up to half time but Barnsley still made it in level. Hourihane's floated free-kick from the right was guided in deftly by Watkins.

Encouraged, Hourihane almost made it two a minute later with a fierce shot from distance.

The Reds had a big chance to go in front from another set piece of Hourihane's after the re-start.

The Irishman's corner was prodded towards goal by Marc Roberts but Tony McMahon cleared off the line. They were to get in front with 20 minutes to go.

Hourihane again delivered perfectly and Mawson rose highest to nod in his second in as many games.

Bradford attempted to take the game to a shootout but Barnsley ran the clock down with clever play.
