Barnsley are still hoping to bring in Conor Chaplin on loan this month after the summer transfer window for permanent signings closed yesterday.

The Reds tried to bring in the Portsmouth attacker all summer but the south coast club refused to let him go. Barnsley are still keen to sign the 21-year-old – who was an unused substitute in Pompey's first game of the season and is out of contract next summer – on a loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer in January. Loans can be done until the end of August.

The Reds feel Chaplin, who can play up front or on the wing, would add an extra element to the squad which equalled the club's biggest ever opening day win and which was kept together despite interest from other clubs.

Chief executive Gauthier Ganaye had been clear all summer that players will only leave if it benefits the Reds and they kept hold of star strikers Tom Bradshaw and Kieffer Moore, who had both attracted several bids from Championship clubs as did others.

Andreas Winkler, assistant to head coach Daniel Stendel, said at a press conference yesterday morning: "We came in on deadline day relaxed because we knew we didn't have a lot of work to do. We already had a very good spine of a squad and we knew we would be happy even if we didn't sign anyone.

"Four or five weeks ago, Tom Bradshaw might have said he wanted to move but not since then. He is friendly and happy and not acting like he wants to move. He likes our style of football, he is a very good counter-presser and high-presser. It was very important that we didn't accept any bids for him. We didn't want to transfer anybody because we are very happy with the squad and we are happy that the board and the owners have helped us keep everybody together."

Asked about the possibility of signing loan players in the next three weeks, Winkler said: "We are very happy with the team we have and we want to work with them so it is not our most important work to try to loan somebody in."

Barnsley's only signing yesterday was Irish striker Gerry McDonagh, 20, who joined from Nottingham Forest and will start in the under 23s team.
