Luke Thomas understood the Barnsley fans’ displeasure when Bristol City went 2-0 up on Friday but is pleased the Reds were able to ‘send them home happy’.
The 20-year-old winger impressed as a substitute as the home side recovered to draw 2-2. Thomas told the Chronicle: “Going 2-0 down, everyone in the stadium and the players on the pitch probably thought we were going to lose. We have come back before against Derby and we showed commitment and a never-say-die attitude.
"On another night, we could have got all three points. The fans weren’t very happy at 2-0 which they had every right to be. All the players made them go home happy in the end. It was a very good result and hopefully one that will spur us on now for a win that we need.”
Thomas started the first nine league games of the season then dropped out of the starting 11 for the last six. He has come off the bench three times including on Friday. He said: “For the last couple of games, I have been out of the team. You need to make an impact as a substitute because you are playing for a start in the next game.
“It’s tough for anyone when they’re not in the team but we have such a talented group here. I need to work hard in training and do more in games. “Hopefully I will get the shirt back in the next few weeks.”
Barnsley are winless in 14 ahead of tomorrow’s home game with fellow strugglers Stoke City. Thomas said: “It’s still early days in the season but it is a massive game. We are at home so we need to take advantage of that and take three points. We just need a little bit of luck.
“When you’re down the bottom, it is harder to win and you don’t really get much luck. The manager (caretaker Adam Murray) said after the game on Friday that our luck has got to change sooner rather than later. I don’t think we are a million miles away.”
