A VETERAN of local football is keen to make sure young players stick with the sport.
Sam Pickering, 67, from New Street, Hemingfield, left local football ten years ago when the combination of hip problems and a stroke meant managing Hoyland’s successful Town Jaguars team had become too much.
It was the end of a management career there which lasted more than 30 years. And Sam had been in the game even longer, first signing as an apprentice at Sheffield Wednesday’s training school.
He was released from the side, but instead of giving up on football - and despite offers from America and Holland to play - Sam decided to take up the mantle of local sport instead.
