A LONG-SERVING chip shop owner has hung up his apron for the last time after retiring following a four-decade-long career.

Chris Wood owned and ran Langdale Fisheries for 45 years.

Recognisable to any Reds fan, Chris would serve fish and chips to both home and away fans on match days.

However, football fans will have to find another haunt for their pre-match meals as Chris decided to shut up shop to enjoy his retirement.

“He made the decision that when he turned 70 he would pack it in,” said Chris’ daughter, Jennifer Altham. “It just-so-happens that his last day was the day before his 70th birthday.

“I know he loved the shop but he just reached that point where he wanted to spend more time with his family and travel with my mum.”

Chris inherited the shop from his father in the 70s, and has decided to close the shop upon his retirement.

“The shop has been sold to someone else, but we aren’t sure what they will do with it yet,” added Jennifer. “It’s definitely the end of an era for dad and his regulars.”

But Chris wasn’t the only retiree from the shop last weekend.

Alongside Chris, long-standing employee Marie Reynolds, 75, also served her last portion of chips after a 35-year career.
