TWO servicemen killed when their plane crashed just a few feet from houses in Pogmoor almost 80 years ago will be remembered with a service at the site on Thursday.
Bomber pilot Sgt Alexander Hollingworth and air gunner Sgt Alexander Buchanan knew their plane was going down as it flew over densely-populated Barnsley on December 6, 1942.
Sgt Hollingworth chose to aim for a quarry he could see in a clearing between the houses off Cresswell Street, sparing the lives of all those on the ground.
A spokesperson from the Pogmoor Area Residents’ Association, the group behind the event, said: “After a break for the pandemic, we’re resuming our annual memorial on Cresswell Street.
“During the service, a minute’s silence will be held at 10.10am, the time the bomber crashed in the former quarry.”
We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
It’s our belief that news should be available to everyone regardless of their circumstance. But we need a little helping hand to do so.
Production Editor, Ashley Ball, said: "In an ever changing media world, it’s important that news is reported correctly and without any hidden agenda.
Your support allows us to keep holding decision-makers to account and report on everything that happens in the town, good or bad, fairly."
