WORSBROUGH Bridge FC are in Germany for a friendly against a side in Barnsley’s twin city of Schwäbisch Gmünd.

The NCEL Division One team are due to play German sixth division side FC Normania tomorrow.

Bridge boss Luke Forgione said: “This is the 50th anniversary of the twinning of Barnsley and Schwäbisch Gmünd.

“It is also our club’s 100th anniversary next week so we wanted to do something special. The FC Normannia link came from our chairman Mark Booth who is keen to develop relationships and get our club and Barnsley on the map.

“FC Normannia are due to come across next year to play and it will become a regular fixture if possible.

“For a club at our level to have the opportunity to go away and represent the town and club in Germany, it’s unknown but it’s great. We’re taking a mixed group of players including 19s and under 21s as well as trialists. I think we will all look back on it fondly.”

Worsbrough’s season is due to start on July 30, with Athersley Rec and Penistone Church also beginning their NCEL campaigns that day.
