FIRST time buyers in Barnsley paid almost £40,000 more for their home than they did five years ago, new figures have revealed.

They spent an average of £142,300 on their property in April - £4,700 more than a year ago, and £38,400 more than in April 2018.

In comparison, former owner-occupiers paid £180,800 on average in April - 27.1 per cent more than first time buyers.

Owners of detached houses saw the biggest rise in property prices in Barnsley in April - they increased 0.5 per cent to £259,159 on average.

Over the last year, prices rose by 4.9 per cent.
