MUSIC promoters are hoping to attract locals to a venue in Barnsley with entertainment from a number of bands and singers lined up throughout the year.

Sam Christie, from the Gig Cartel - a live music promotion and artist booking agency - told the Chronicle he is trying to help ‘shape the narrative’ of Birdwell Venue, on Sheffield Road, as it still suffers from the years of it being a working men’s club.

“The venue is now very much one of the best specified music venues in South Yorkshire and we are now starting to see some big name artists perform there which is incredible for Barnsley,” he said.

Barney Vernon, a director at the Gig Cartel, added: “We want as many people as possible to come and visit the venue and embrace it for what it is.

“I remember in 2005 the Arctic Monkeys performed, just a few weeks before they released their first album.

“The Undertones will be hosting soon, as well as the Everly Pregnant Brothers, The Futureheads and Shed Seven.

“The venue is now part of the grassroots eco system and needs customer support to keep music live.”
