BARNSLEY Hospital’s cancer workforce has almost doubled in a decade according to NHS statistics - and the town’s bucking a national trend in retaining more of its staff.

The Gawber facility’s headcount has grown from 63 in 2010 to 103 in 2022, with NHS data showing the turnover rate was 8.1 per cent - much lower than the 12.1 per cent national figure.

The figures also show the trust recorded a 12.1 per cent joining rate in 2022, with 12 people entering the cancer services workforce.

Further analysis by the charity suggests the number of people being seen by a specialist for suspected cancer since 2010 has grown almost four times faster than the number of NHS cancer staff.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “The NHS workforce has never been bigger and we have made significant progress in developing and growing the cancer workforce.”
