JOSH Benson and Conor McCarthy are getting very close to playing first team football again after injury but it is unclear if they will be involved at Wigan Athletic tomorrow.

Midfielder Benson has been back in training this week after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury sustained in May’s play-off final loss.

Head coach Neill Collins told the Chronicle: “He’s back in training. Josh obviously finished the season, he’s looking in great shape.

“We will decide if we include him but, for me, he’s been back for a week and we need to find him some gametime.

“But it’s great to have him back.”

Centre-back McCarthy has missed almost a year with a knee problem.

Collins said: “He has made progress but it’s a lot to ask for someone to come back in after such a long time out.

“He’s very close, in the next couple of weeks we will see him reintegrate into the first team squad.”

Corey O’Keeffe is back in contention for tomorrow’s trip to Wigan.

The right wing-back had been out with a thigh strain since limping off on the opening day.

Midfield star Luca Connell has missed the entire season so far with illness.

Collins said: “Progress is going slow but I want to emphasise he’s a young man and the most important thing is his health.”

Centre-back Robbie Cundy is still not in training.

Young midfielder Joe Ackroyd is out with a knee injury.

Collins said there were no new injuries from Saturday’s match or in training.
