BARNSLEY Women’s FC are top of their league for Christmas after finishing off 2023 with an emphatic away win.

They won 6-0 at bottom club FC United of Manchester on Sunday in their first game since November 12, following a series of postponements due to the poor weather.

The Reds are top of National League Division One North – the fourth tier in England – with 25 points from their nine games. They have won eight and drawn one so far this season, in the league, and are now three points clear in the only promotion spot into the Premier Division.

At FC United, Emily Pierrepoint hit a hat-trick with the other scorers being Autumn Housley, Abi Housecroft and Alayna Millard. Assistant coach Tobias Taylor said: “Coming into Sunday we had a great opportunity to retain our place on top of the table going into Christmas. Through a mature, patient and together performance, we came out the victors. There were fantastic displays from all players, showing very good quality with and without the ball.

“We continue to strive to improve as a team. We are very excited for the challenges and opportunities ahead of us, and pushing towards our aim of winning the league.”

Barnsley are due to return to action on January 7 at home to Chester-le-Street Town.
