BARNSLEY’S only Conservative MP is continuing her campaign to protect children from harmful content by requiring cinema-style age ratings on streaming platforms.

Miriam Cates, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has been spearheading the campaign which she believes will protect young people across Barnsley.

She met with the Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer last week to discuss her amendments to the Media Bill which would set minimum standards for age ratings.

Mrs Cates said: “These would help parents to understand what shows are suitable for children of different ages and prevent them from seeing inappropriate content.

“The growth of streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+ has meant many children now almost exclusively watch on-demand TV.

“Unlike normal television or cinemas there are no legal controls to stop them from seeing harmful or age-inappropriate shows.

“That’s why I’m working hard in Parliament to increase protections and give parents the tools they need to keep their children safe.”
