BOSS PRAISES FULL DEBUTANT PINES

Barnsley head coach Neill Collins praised full debutant Donovan Pines after his first start for the club.

The American centre-back played in the middle of the back three during the 2-1 home win over promotion rivals Derby County on Saturday.

Collins told the Chronicle: “Donovan is there to win headers at six foot five. He handled the occasion really well. You could see his strengths with with physicality and pace. I am pleased for him. That game will stand him in good stead.”

WOMEN WIN CUP TIE 6-0

Barnsley FC women won 6-0 at Hull United to reach the North East Premier League Cup quarter-final.

The Reds were 4-0 up at half-time then added another two.

The scorers were Kirstie Nicholls, twice, Betty Cheetham, Charley Evans, Jodie Gregory and Macy Lunn.

They do not have a game scheduled this weekend in the North East Premier, in which they are currently second.

MIXED WEEKEND FOR LOANEES

Callum Styles made his debut for loan club Sunderland in the Championship on Saturday.

Styles, who signed from Barnsley on deadline day on February 1 but has been recovering from illness, played the first hour in the managerless Black Cats' 2-1 home loss to Swansea City.

Jack Shepherd was left out of Cheltenham’s squad for the 1-1 draw at Wigan on Friday in League One while Kacper Lopata also did not play for Port Vale.

Kyran Lofthouse played the full game as MK Dons won 3-0 at home to Newport County in League Two.

Conor McCarthy helped Swindon Town keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw at League Two leaders Stockport.

In Scotland, Oli Shaw returned from injury to come off the bench for Motherwell against Celtic who scored twice in injury-time to win 3-1.

Andy Dallas also returned from injury as he came off the bench for the last 25 minutes in Oldham Athletic’s 2-1 home loss to Kidderminster Harriers in the National League.

UNDER 18S SET FOR TOP OF TABLE CLASH

Barnsley under 18s are due to host Birmingham City in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday from 11.30am on the Oakwell academy pitches.

The Reds, the reigning champions, are second - 16 points behind Birmingham who have played five more games.

Barnsley’s game at Wigan Athletic on Saturday was called off.

They are also due to host Cardiff City the following Tuesday from 11am.

TWO UNDER 21S GAMES

Barnsley under 21s are due to visit Peterborough United tomorrow then host Wigan on Friday.

Josh Benson is expected to play some part as he returns from injury while Aiden Marsh and Max Watters have been starting up front recently.
