THE safety of Wombwell residents is set to be improved thanks to new CCTV and street lighting at a hotspot site.

Locals had contacted Barnsley Council following a series of incidents at the side of Summer Lane car park - adjacent to George Street.

They had asked for more work to be done to keep residents safe, and a new lighting column and CCTV unit have now been installed at the site thanks to funding through the Safer Streets Fund.

Coun James Higginbottom, who represents the ward, told the Chronicle: “Following concerns raised by the landlady of the Little George after recent incidents in that part of the car park, we have been working with council officers to improve community safety and provide reassurance to residents.

“I am delighted to report that we have been able to secure funding to install a new lighting column and CCTV.

“This will make Summer Lane car park a safer space for residents, shoppers and visitors to Wombwell to be able to enjoy.”
