BARNSLEY College came together yesterday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day - and they’ve been playing a part in the national celebration.

The college launched a digital tribute last month called #VEHAPPY which celebrates the anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe - and it was developed using software from the college’s creative and digital industries department.

And they’ve continued their celebrations throughout the month, including the opening of a commemorative garden at its Old Mill Lane campus yesterday.

Principal David Akeroyd told the Chronicle: “The garden is a permanent structure that will be here for future generations.

“It’s been designed in collaboration with the National Allotment Association and it’s planted in red, white, and blue.

“In addition to that, the way that it is directed is that at 11am on November 11 the sun will cast a shadow directly over the centre where the tree is.

“That will be done to commemorate Armistice Day in the future.”
