A 15-year-old from Royston picked up a silver medal at the British Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield this week.

Billy Wilson-French combined with his dance partner Lucy Hancock to finish second in the junior dance section of the event which featured the best in the sport from across the country.

The junior age category includes skaters aged as old as 20 with Billy among the youngest competitors but still able to finish on the podium.

‘“It was just the best day,” said Billy, who hopes to compete in the Winter Olympics in the future.

“I was so happy with the skating and result and what we achieved in the British Championships. We were so thankful to even podium never mind finish second.

“We got a personal best in the rhythm dance by five points and we got a personal best in the free dance long programme by six points.”

Billy began ice skating aged ten after attending a birthday party and has won numerous regional and national medals in a glittering career.

This week’s competition took place at IceSheffield where he often trains as he skates six days per week and has also travelled to America for extra courses.

He said: “Our team of Yebin Mok, Oscar Peters, David Hartley, Mark Hanretty and Kelly Dubbery have all worked together and pushed us extremely hard to gain these results.

“The help of Marina Olegovna Zoueva in Canton, USA was also amazing as we had some fantastic training over there.”
