A champion ten pin bowler is 'overwhelmed' that she has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award in the Sporting Achievement category.

Keira Reay is just 16 but is recognised in her chosen sport as an up and coming worldwide star.

She put in a stunning performance at the recent European Youth Bowling Championships in Vienna, taking two gold medals in the singles event and the all events tally.

Playing over 11 days, she and her team also won bronze for the doubles and silver for the trios. Keira reached the highest scores out of over 70 girls competing from all over Europe.

She was nominated by David Williams from Barnsley Bowl. He said: "It was the first time Keira had competed in the tournament and although expectation was high, no-one thought she would achieve what she did. It was amazing."

Keira, of Carlton Road, Athersley South, started ten pin bowling aged seven. Her family has supported her all the way, taking her to tournaments across Europe. David said they would be thrilled for Keira to be recognised locally in the Proud of Barnsley awards.

She said: "I am overwhelmed that I have been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award, especially as ten pin bowling is not such a recognised sport. Hopefully through this recognition it will inspire more young people to take up the sport."

Do you know a Barnsley sporting hero, club or team? Do they demonstrate fair play and a good sporting attitude?

If so, why not nominate them for a Proud of Barnsley award? Winners will be treated to a fabulous night in the awards and dinner at the Holiday Inn, Dodworth, on November 15.

Entries close on Monday September 9 - so hurry and get those nominations in.
