CINEWORLD and Superbowl have signed up to be part of the new face of Barnsley town centre.

The multiplex giant has agreed to bring a 13-screen cinema to the town as part of the £120m facelift for the town centre.

Bosses said a revamped Barnsley is a prime location for one of its 'next generation' venues.

Superbowl UK has also signed up and said its Barnsley venue will boast 12 state-of-the-art bowling lanes, lounge bar and food diner, as well as a modern amusement arcade arena.

The announcement came yesterday at the same time Barnsley Council revealed it will be putting in the remaining £70m needed to deliver the leisure and retail side of the ambitious town centre regeneration.

The council has already put £50m in to fund the first phase and yesterday council leader Coun Sir Steve Houghton said it will pay for the remainder of the development, bringing its total investment to £120m.

Under original proposals the plan was to secure private sector investment to build out the second phase.
