Worsbrough Bridge FC are 'desperate' for volunteers as they face the possibility of folding after almost 100 years.

The Park Road club, one of the most established and highest-placed in Barnsley, are operating with a crew of four volunteers while their first team – who lost 9-1 at home to Hallam on Saturday – are in a relegation battle and face a huge match at fellow strugglers Westella and Willerby tomorrow.

"We are desperate for volunteers," said chairman Peter Schofield.

"There are only four of us which is not enough for a club like Worsbrough Bridge at our level of football.  One of the other volunteers is 75 and I am 63 this week. There is only so far four people can go.

"There is definitely a chance of the club folding if we don't get more people in.  What we could really do with is a commercial manager to bring sponsors in and take a percentage of the profit. We have been here for 94 years and we won't go down without a fight."

The Briggers are back at Park Road this season after their previous owner took them to Grimethorpe and then Maltby in late 2015 following a dispute with the association that runs the ground. Schofield said: "We have done quite well off the field since then. We inherited a lot of fines for non-payments of fixtures but we have paid them all off now. We brought in a bit of money from sponsorships but we spent that on the fines and the kits.

"Now we need to pay entrance fees for next season as well as the general maintenance of the ground. So we are desperate for more sponsorship."

Worsbrough are third bottom in the Northern Counties East League Division One and have lost 20 of their last 25 games in all competitions. They are one point and one place above tomorrow's hosts Westella. The next week could be vital for Bridge's fight against relegation as they are also due to host fourth-bottom Dronfield Town on Tuesday.

Worsbrough are having success in other areas as they are hoping to field a women's team next season while their under 18s boys' team is top of the Bud Evans League.
