Scottish midfielder Stevie Mallan has agreed to join Barnsley from Scottish side St Mirren.

The 21-year-old has become the Reds’ first signing of the summer after they agreed a fee of around £300,000 for the midfielder and announced he had agreed terms on a three-year deal.

Scotland under 21s player Mallan has 29 goals in 112 games for the Scottish Championship club. After being relegated from the Premiership in his first season, he netted 14 last season and 11 this campaign including six in the last nine league games as the Buddies avoided relegation to the third tier on goal difference.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom has told the Chronicle: “He’s someone we have known about for a long time. We made contact with St Mirren in January but couldn’t do anything then. But we’ve gone in for him again now. He’s a player who likes to get on the ball and make things happen. He’s got good set piece delivery. He’s a good attacking midfielder but he has also played in deeper central midfield.”
