A BRIERLEY woman has won an award at Parliament for taking action to protect the environment from climate change.
Local RSPB supporter Claire Tinsley, of Church Street, travelled to London for the Green Heart Hero Awards ceremony.
The 68-year-old won an award in the best green heart category in recognition of her creative work to raise awareness of climate change.
Her creation - a badge which features a hare’s face - is made from felt and is painted with acrylic inks.
The awards, which range from accolades for green schools or businesses to sustainable sports projects, were presented by high-profile figures such as broadcaster Clive Anderson.
Claire said: “I was surprised and delighted to hear l had won the award. Hares are such magical creatures, surrounded by so much myth and mystery, and yet they’re losing their habitat.
“The natural world needs us to speak for it. We share this planet with a most diverse and wonderful natural world. I want future generations to be able to enjoy it and be amazed at life.”
Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley East, who came to meet Claire at the ceremony, added: “It’s wonderful that Claire has used her creative talents to show her love of the natural world. Her hare green heart is beautiful and given that hares’ habitats are at risk, it’s a strong symbol of the need to protect our beautiful environment.
“Congratulations to Claire on winning this national award - it’s fantastic that Barnsley has been represented.”
