Adam Davies saved a penalty as Barnsley drew 0-0 at promotion rivals Portsmouth to extend their unbeaten run to 14 League One games.

The result kept the second-placed Reds five points clear of fourth-placed Portsmouth but allowed third-placed Sunderland, who won their game, to move within two points with a game in hand.

Barnsley had long periods of pressure but it was a tense encounter and a game of few chances.

Daniel Stendel made one change to the side which was held 0-0 by Burton Albion on Tuesday, with Mamadou Thiam replacing Ryan Hedges on the left wing.

The first half saw Barnsley have more of the ball and play some good football but it was the hosts who had the two clear-cut chances.

The first first shot came in the 20th minute from Jacob Brown who fired wide of the bottom right corner from outside the box. Seconds later, Portsmouth’s Bryn Morris flicked a header wide from a left-wing cross when well-placed in the middle of the Reds box.

Cauley Woodrow had the first shot on target in the 26th minute but his tame, low 25-yard effort was easily gathered by the home goalkeeper. McGeehan the curled a 25-yard effort wide after a nice backheel flick by Thiam.

Portsmouth had a huge chance in the 39th minute as Liam Lindsay lost the ball deep in his half and Omar Bogle put Viv Solomon-Otobor clean through but Davies made an excellent one-on-one save.

The second half saw Portsmouth begin well with Morris shooting over from long-range before Ronan Curtis cut in from the right wing and shot straight at Davies from a tight angle.

The penalty was awarded in the 60th minute as Dimitri Cavare tripped up Solomon-Otobor on the left edge of the box, with Barnsley claiming it was outside the area. But Davies sprang to his right to brilliantly deny Omar Bogle from 12 yards.

Barnsley left-back Dani Pinillos should have put them in front five minutes later after Woodrow put him clean through on goal but he blazed over from 12 yards out.

Brown then came agonisingly close in the 82nd minute when his header from an Alex Mowatt corner appeared to take a big deflection up onto the underside of the crossbar then was cleared.

Pinnock then headed a cross by substitute Ryan Hedges but goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray got down to his right to easily keep it out of the bottom right corner.

  • 14:08pm

Pompey have not won in seven league games since New Year’s Day and have slipped down from first to fourth. Kenny Jackett’s men are five points behind second-placed Barnsley who are five points off leaders Luton Town and four clear of third-placed Sunderland who have a game in hand.
  • 14:08pm
Assistant coach Dale Tonge said: “It’s a classic six-pointer. We play a lot of the teams in and around us in the league in the next month so we know how big those games will be, but none are bigger than Portsmouth.”
  • 14:20pm

Tonge added: “It’s a massive match and puts down a marker. We can put a bigger gap between us and Portsmouth. We’re not looking at getting a point, because we understand there are lot of teams around us. We are going there to win.”
  • 14:20pm
The Reds have sold more than 2,000 tickets for today’s game. Tonge said: “The fans are buzzing and it’s great to see because we have had hardship at the club with the relegation and other things. It will be a brilliant atmosphere down there. It has to give you a lift when you see the fans who have paid their hard-earned money to travel down. We want to put a performance on for them.”
  • 14:21pm

The Reds are currently unbeaten in 13 league games since December 8, with nine wins in that sequence. If the run continues in Portsmouth tomorrow, it will be the club’s best since the 1984/85 season under Bobby Collins.
  • 14:23pm
Barnsley were held to a 0-0 home draw against mid-table Burton Albion on Tuesday. Tonge said: “It’s the perfect game after Burton. The boys were frustrated and a little bit down after Tuesday’s game. But Burton were the best team I have seen at Oakwell for the last month and we have to understand that they did their job really well.”
  • 14:31pm

Luton do not play until tomorrow at home to Coventry City so Barnsley could go within two points of top spot today.
  • 14:35pm

The trip to Portsmouth begins a five-match run in which the Reds face three of the current top six as – after going to Southend on March 2 then hosting Accrington on March 9 – they welcome Sunderland on March 12 before visiting sixth-placed Doncaster three days later.
  • 14:39pm
Head coach Daniel Stendel said: “We are looking forward to the game. Portsmouth also did not win on Tuesday and we have a big chance to increase the gap above them to eight points. Then later we play a home game against Sunderland, so we have a lot of chances to achieve our goal.”
  • 14:40pm

Pompey enjoyed an incredible first four months of the season, winning 20 of 27 games in all competitions with only two defeats. An eight-match winning run left them six points clear at the top and 12 ahead of Barnsley at the 20-game mark.
  • 14:40pm

But they were beaten twice in December then four more times after the turn of the year while they slipped below the Reds during a seven-game winless run in the league, losing three then drawing the last four.
  • 14:43pm

They drew 3-3 at Southend United on Saturday having been 3-0 up then were held 1-1 at home on Tuesday to lowly Bristol Rovers who missed a penalty. While Pompey have the best away record in the division with 32 points, their home record is the worst in the top six with 29.
  • 14:44pm
When the sides drew 1-1 on December 15 at Oakwell, Barnsley had the better of the chances but lacked a clinical edge and visiting goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray produced several good saves. Gareth Evans put the Reds ahead just before the break then Cauley Woodrow levelled in the second half
  • 14:47pm

Tonge said: “They had an outstanding start but now maybe the games have caught up with them. We were by far the better team when we played them but they did a good job and they are a very professional and organised team. It’s noticeable that, at home, they haven’t got the results they wanted.”
  • 14:47pm

Barnsley lost just one of their first six games in Portsmouth, winning four. But, since 1980, their 19 visits have brought 13 losses, five draws and only one win – a 3-1 success in 1999. Since then, they have lost four times and drawn 4-4 in 2002. Their most recent visits were defeats by scorelines of 1-0 and 2-0 in 2011.
  • 14:50pm
Barnsley loaned winger Lloyd Isgrove to Portsmouth in the January transfer window for the rest of the season. The 26-year-old – who is ineligible to face his parent club – is yet to make an appearance after injury.
  • 14:51pm

Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt missed a penalty at Fratton Park last season while on loan at Oxford United then slapped Pompey defender Nathan Thompson who celebrated in his face and was sent off in a 3-0 defeat.
  • 14:52pm

Mowatt said: “It wasn’t the best of games but I am hoping to put that right on Saturday if I play. I was frustrated with myself for missing the penalty. It happened and hopefully it doesn’t happen again. I might get stick from their fans but I don’t really mind.”
  • 14:53pm
Mowatt made a rare mistake at home to Portsmouth this season, gifting Gareth Evans the ball for his opener in a 1-1 December draw. He said: “It was a sloppy goal from me so that is another motivation.”
  • 14:55pm

Mowatt’s central midfield partner Cameron McGeehan also has painful memories of Portsmouth, having broken his leg against them in 2017 then being booed off by their fans. He said: “I spoke with Cam about it the other day. He said he doesn’t think he’ll get a good reception there and I was saying I wouldn’t either. But that’s part of the game and I think we will enjoy it.”
  • 14:58pm

Only Mamadou Thiam and Cauley Woodrow of today’s squad have scored more goals this season than Mowatt but all of his strikes have been at Oakwell. He said: “I have got five goals this season and, if I could use my right foot, it might be more. I have missed two one-on-ones in the last two weeks which is frustrating but we still won the games.”
  • 14:59pm

The players are out on the pitch and this big League One game is about to start, after a minute's applause for a former Portsmouth player
