AN Oxspring couple who are planning to walk 500,000 steps this month in memory of their friend’s daughter who died of a rare form of cancer have already raised more than £1,000.

Mark Spice, 53, and his partner Lisa Ashton, 47 are raising funds for CLIC Sargent - a charity which offers support to families when a young person is diagnosed with cancer - after they were heartened by Rod and Tracy Fairclough’s story of their daughter Jess.

Jess died from a rare form of cancer in November 2015 when she was just 18, and having met her parents at Glastonbury, Mark and Lisa decided they wanted to raise funds and awareness for the charity.

Mark told the Chronicle: “I’ve done a cycle ride before in memory of Jess back in 2018 from Somerset to Derbyshire, but this challenge only came about a couple of weeks before we started it.

“We’re both very inspired by our friends’ story - I can’t even begin to think what Rod and Tracy have been through.

“Lisa is a district nurse and I work in retail development so we don’t get in until late but we’re still doing 16,000 steps every day.

“Our legs are becoming more conditioned to it now but it was quite a challenge at the start.”
